A Definitive Review of the Best Non-Toxic Mattress Toppers in 2024

In this review, I’ll break down the best non-toxic mattress toppers I found from extensive research.

My Top Picks for the Best Non-Toxic Mattress Topper

My top five picks are:

  1. Naturepedic’s Adagio – Best Luxury Topper
  2. Happsy – Best Value Topper
  3. Avocado Green – Best Overall Topper
  4. Plushbeds Slice of Heaven – Best Pure Latex Topper
  5. White Lotus Home – Best 100% Organic Cotton Topper

They are all high-quality, non-toxic toppers. Let’s take a closer look…

First, Why Go Natural and Organic?

In my review of the best natural mattresses, I made the case that we should all be sleeping on organic materials for both physical health and environmental reasons.

From a health perspective, the main concern is VOCs or volatile organic compounds. VOCs are chemicals released into the air from your average mattress. Formaldehyde is one example.

VOCs can emit hundreds of chemicals into the air that we breathe into our bloodstream—not just when you first purchase your mattress (called off-gassing), but for years to come.

Once inhaled, VOCs can trigger several health problems.

And there’s an easy way to avoid these toxic chemicals: sleep on a non-toxic mattress or an organic topper made from natural, organic material (that has no off-gassing).

All of the best non-toxic mattress toppers in this review are:

  • Non-toxic
  • Hypoallergenic
  • Chemical-free
  • Eco-friendly

All of the toppers in this review contain no VOCs and are made with all-natural materials.

Why Purchase a Non-toxic Mattress Topper

However, there are numerous instances where a non-toxic mattress topper is a better option than a new mattress.

For example, a natural topper might be best when you:

  1. Recently purchased your existing mattress.
  2. Don’t want to be wasteful and get rid of your existing mattress.
  3. Don’t have the budget for an organic mattress at the moment.

And I’m sure there are other reasons.

The main benefits of an organic or natural latex mattress topper are that you’re:

  1. Sleeping on a non-toxic, chemical-free, healthier surface.
  2. Upgrading your sleep experience as the best non-toxic mattress toppers support more restful sleep.

Also, if you have a non-organic or old mattress, a natural mattress topper will add additional protection from the synthetic mattress below it.

What Are Non-Toxic Mattress Toppers Made Of?

In most cases, the answer is a combination of:

  1. Natural latex for comfort, bounce, and responsiveness
  2. Organic cotton for a breathable cover
  3. Organic wool for added comfort, breathability, and natural flame retardant.

Natural latex is processed from the rubber tree. For it to be natural latex or organic latex, it needs to be processed without any synthetic materials like petroleum. And you would be surprised how few options are genuinely “natural” and certified organic.

Many options on the market say “natural latex,” but on closer examination, they have a blend of natural and synthetic latex. Also, most of the organic mattress toppers listed in this review have cotton covers, which are made of certified organic cotton.

Finally, there is one excellent option on the market if you’re looking for a 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton topper (no latex). If this interests you, see the White Lotus Home option below.

Below this review, you’ll find more details about organic certifications and standards.

My Review of the Best Non-Toxic Mattress Toppers

Okay, let’s take a look at the best non-toxic mattress toppers:

best non-toxic mattress topper

Adagio Organic Latex Topper by Naturepedic

Naturepedic is one of three brands that have GOTS certified for organic cotton and natural latex (Avocado and Happsy are the other two).

Naturepedic’s Adagio Latex Topper is another excellent organic option that provides sleepers with a “nesting” feeling.

The Materials:

  • 2-inches of GOLS-certified organic latex
  • GOTS-certified organic cotton cover

The Details:

  • Free shipping and free returns
  • MADE SAFE Certified Non-Toxic
  • Greenguard Gold Certified

best mattress topper happsy

Happsy Organic, Non-Toxic Mattress Topper

Happsy is another mattress brand that I featured in my organic mattress review.

This no-thrills brand offers all of the certified organic materials you would expect at a competitive price.

The Materials:

  • 2 inches of GOLS Organic Certified natural Dunlop latex
  • Certified organic cotton cover

The Details:

  • Free shipping and returns
  • MADE SAFE Certified Non-Toxic
  • Greenguard Gold Certified
  • Made in the USA
  • Cover is nonremovable
  • 120-night trial
  • Prices range from $249 for a Twin to $499 for a King size

The Bottom Line:

The Happsy Topper is straightforward with no options other than mattress sizes. But their topper is 100% certified organic.

best non-toxic mattress topper avocado

Avocado Green Natural Latex Mattress Topper

If you read my analysis of the best eco-friendly mattresses, you know I have an affinity for the Avocado brand. They use the highest standards in their material selection.

Everything in their mattresses is GOTS and GOLS-certified organic.  And their mattress topper is no different.

The Materials:

  • 2 inches of GOLS organic certified latex harvested from tree-tapped and sustainable sources (83%)
  • GOTS organic and OEKO-TEK Standard 100 certified wool fiber (17%)
  • GOTS organic certified cotton
  • A vegan version of their organic topper is also available (without wool)

The Details:

  • Free shipping and free returns
  • 2 firmness options: plush and firm
  • 10-year limited warranted
  • Handmade in California
  • Weight ranges from 25 lbs for a Twin to 42 lbs for a King
  • MADE SAFE Certified Non-Toxic
  • Greenguard Gold Certified
  • Carbon-neutral production and shipping
  • 100-night sleep trial
  • Pricing ranges from $549 – $909

The Best Part:

Besides being 100% GOTS-certified organic, Avocado gives you the choice of either a plush or firm mattress topper. The firm topper gives you more of a gentle, resilient support. The plush topper provides a more luxury-plush experience.

Plus, unlike most of its competitors, the organic cotton cover has a zipper in case you need to adjust the natural latex inside. (However, the cover isn’t washable.)

The Bottom Line:

The Avocado Green Topper is an excellent product, and likely the best organic mattress topper overall, but it’s now much pricier than other comparable options (above).

best non-toxic mattress topper latex

The Materials:

  • 100% Natural Talalay Latex
  • Organic cotton cover (if you select this option)
  • NOTE: This product is not GOTS-certified organic from materials to factory (just the material itself)

The Details:

  • Free shipping
  • Non-returnable (no sleep trial)
  • Select either 2” or 3” natural latex thickness
  • Select from four firmness options: soft, medium, medium-firm, extra-firm
  • Greenguard Gold Certified
  • Made in the USA
  • Lifespan of up to 20 years (according to their website)
  • Prices range from $288 for a 2-inch Twin to $774 for 3-inch King

The Best Part:

The best thing about Plushbed’s Natural Latex Topper is the versatility in customizing the topper just the way you want it with four different firmness levels.

The Bottom Line:

Plushbeds makes solid, natural latex mattresses and toppers. The main downside is that Plushbeds doesn’t accept returns for their non-toxic mattress toppers if you find this topper doesn’t suit you.

best organic cotton mattress topper lotus

White Lotus Home 100% Organic Cotton Mattress Topper

For various reasons, some individuals may be searching for a 100% organic cotton mattress topper (with no latex or wool).

I was in this camp about six years ago. I was concerned about the sustainability of tapping rubber trees (for natural latex) and so I wanted to get a topper that was 100% certified organic cotton. It wasn’t an easy feat until I discovered White Lotus.

At that time, White Lotus Home didn’t have much of an online presence. They had a small retail location in New Jersey and I drove several hours to check them out. White Lotus makes high-quality organic mattress products.

Because of the sheer volume of the certified organic cotton used in these toppers, White Lotus is more expensive than other alternatives. But you can take 20% off your order total by using code WLH2020.

The Materials:

  • 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton inside (2-inch thickness)
  • 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton Twill case

The Details:

  • Free shipping
  • 30-day returns if the item is unused (no sleep trial)
  • Available in 2-inch and 4-inch thickness
  • 100% certified organic cotton batting and cover
  • Handmade in the USA (New Jersey)
  • Cost ranges from $545 for a 2-inch Twin to $1,998 for a 4-inch King

The Best Part:

No latex. No wool. Just 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton.

The Bottom Line:

White Lotus Home is the way to go if you’re in the market for a 100% organic cotton mattress topper.

What Should You Look for in a Non-Toxic Mattress Topper?

organic mattress topper GOTS certified

GOLS Certified organic mattress topper

As you can see from the toppers reviewed above, the primary qualification for the best organic toppers is GOTS certification.

GOTS, or the Global Organic Textile Standard, offers the highest standards in organic certifications worldwide. GOTS is the certification for organic cotton.

GOLS is the certification for organic latex.

Many so-called “all-natural” toppers do not have these certifications.

For a complete breakdown of the certifications used in the organic mattress industry, see this guide.

Which Non-Toxic Mattress Toppers Have the Highest Organic Standards?

If you’re looking for the highest standard in GOTS-certified organic including the materials, the finished product, and the factory itself, only three brands pass this test:

  1. Avocado,
  2. Happsy, and
  3. Naturepedic.

These three brands are also the only Made Safe certified products. This means that they contain no materials considered to be harmful to human health.

All of the cotton materials used in the White Lotus Home topper are also certified by GOTS, but I didn’t see them listed in their database with these other brands.

Are the Covers on These Organic Toppers Removable?

As far as I can tell, the only organic topper with a removable cover is Avocado Green.

But, even in the case of Avocado, the cover is not washable.

So What is the Best Non-Toxic Mattress Topper?

All of the non-toxic mattress toppers reviewed above are made with top-quality, certified organic materials.

But if I had to choose one from this excellent list, for most shoppers looking for an organic latex topper with an organic cotton cover, the Happsy or Naturepedic are excellent options.

Naturepedic’s mattress topper has a bit more “luxury” feel and I trust this company more simply based on my communications with them.

Avocado Green makes solid products, and I would say that their non-toxic mattress toppers are the “best,” however they recently increased their pricing—almost doubled them!

And if you’re looking for a 100% organic cotton topper, go with White Lotus Home. (I purchased a topper from White Lotus years ago. Very high quality and still in good shape.)

That said, in the category of best non-toxic mattress toppers, I would go with Naturepedic’s Adagio.

  • I was wondering if anyone has slept on the organic Avocado for a length of time. Did it sink down after a while and you have a sinkhole where you sleep. I’m a little heavy and want a mattress that doesn’t sink and stay that way . I want it to support my back, hips ect and bounce back when I get up. Any suggestions.

    • Are you asking about the Avocado topper or the mattress?

The mattress itself is holding up great. You just have to rotate it (not flip it), once each month or so. I don’t have the topper personally. I’ve read online, however, that if you weigh over 250 lbs, the Avocado mattress may not be a suitable choice.

      • Thanks Scott? Yes I was looking at the avocado mattress topper. I purchased another kind. I just hope it works.

  • Scott, do you know anything about Savvy Rest?
About 8 years ago when organic latex & wool mattresses were coming from even more limited makers, we bought from them and have been very pleased.
I’m just wondering if they have continued to be a reputable source.
    Thanks so much!

    • Maggie, they seem legitimate. That is, they have many of the important certifications for the organic mattress industry.

However, their go-to-market model looks outdated. For example, they don’t have any sleep trials or return policy, which puts them at a significant disadvantage of the competitors mentioned above.

  • ANY THOUGHTS ON BRENTWOOD OCEANO MATTRESS AND OR TOPPER FOR ORGANIC AND SAFE TO USE? i bought mattress in Feb. 2020 – like it but it ‘s hot and i’m noticing pressure points now that its 6 mo old, considering mattress topper… i can’t use latex mattresses.. but want safe and toxic free!

    • Brentwood is a decent company, but they don’t offer the same strict “organic” policies and certifications that the other brands I mentioned above have. That said, I do believe that Oceano is the most popular mattress offered by Brentwood.

      • THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE! all the one’s you mentioned have latex in them other than the Lotus… can you tell me if know -does it last being cotton/wool? soft and cozy? sleep hot? I see it is tufted and am assuming you can feel the “squares” created by that when sleeping -if that’s an issue… have you slept on it before? I am really wishing I can just find a normal old innerspring mattress -much cooler -worked great years ago!

        • As a general rule, cotton sleeps hotter than latex or wool. Both latex and wool offer better heat distribution. The all-cotton Lotus topper is firm, but I didn’t recall feeling the tufts. I did feel the tufts on the Avocado mattress, which I mitigated by adding a light blanket over it.

I’m sure there are still old-school innerspring mattresses on the market. But I don’t know if they have any with 100% organic materials.

          • thanks so much for the input. I did feel the tufts on the avacado when I had it- not a big deal though. looking for a topper for my oceano that relieves some pressure points and isn’t latex or toxic, my have to stick with oceano topper,, don’t want firm lotus then. I appreciate all the research you do!

  • I am very interested in adding an organic mattress topper to our bed. When I see ‘latex’….I feel like it’s going to sleep very ‘hot’ for me. Any suggestions or which topper to steer towards or away from if I want to stay cooler at night? Thanks!
