Give the Gift of a Smile

2009 October 2

When was the last time you randomly stopped what you were doing, took a deep breath, smiled and thought about the precious gift of that moment?

Matter of fact, when was the last time you smiled for no good reason? Try it right now: Smile and laugh. Come on, no one’s watching. Put a big, silly grin on your face and laugh out loud.

Think about how lucky you are to be alive. Notice how you feel. If you are really smiling, you’re feeling a great sensation moving through your body, and you’re saying to yourself, “Hmmm, I should do this more often.” Well, go right ahead, smile, laugh and feel lucky for no particular reason.

Have you ever passed someone who was smiling or laughing and then found yourself doing the same? Sometimes we’re unconscious of this viral reaction.

A smile opens doorways to a whole new universe. Smiling makes it easier to meet people, as smiles attract others to you. A smile can literally transform a person’s appearance. A frowning person usually looks unattractive, while a simple smile aligns with intrinsic beauty.

Try it for yourself: Go to a mirror and put an intense frown on your face and then a big smile. Notice the difference.

Our fast-paced lifestyles are demanding. Smiling helps you reconnect with the present moment.

Why should you give someone, including yourself, the gift of a smile?

  1. Smiles are contagious—you’ll cause others to smile too.
  2. Smiling makes you look more attractive—it’s easier to meet people.
  3. Smiling helps promote a healthier body and a clearer mind.
  4. Smiling makes you feel happier and more alive.
  5. Smiles bring you back to the present moment.

Learn to stop what you are doing; take a deep breath and smile. Think about how lucky you are to be alive.
