Find Your Authentic Swing

2009 May 11

The film The Legends of Bagger Vance used golf as a metaphor to illustrate how we tend to get in our own way. Any golfer can confirm this reality.

The mystical caddy Bagger Vance guides the emotionally distraught Randolph Junah from the hellish world of apathy to rediscover his heart and spirit—his true authentic swing.

Our authentic swing—our natural way of being in the world—gets masked by social programming. As a child, the first time we’re corrected and taught how things are “supposed” to be, we begin to hide our authentic swing.

All of our judgments, positions, opinions, limiting beliefs, and projected values nail the “real Self” in a coffin. Then, we learn to behave through cultural programming, following the collective without questioning what’s in our best interest or that of the greater good.

There are those few moments—rare but precious—when we “accidentally” fall into a state of flow. Everything becomes effortless. We let go of our resistance and soar without limiting thoughts and inner commentary. In those beautiful moments, we are free.

Enter a state of flow and live your authentic swing. It doesn’t require “getting” anything. Instead, as Bagger Vance explains to Junah, you just have to get out of your own way.

What a powerful idea: Don’t seek out your authentic swing. Only eliminate the barriers you’ve inadvertently put in your own way. As psychiatrist David R. Hawkins explains, “The sun is always shining. You need only remove the clouds.”
